Assessment of CFD-Based Ship Maneuvering Predictions Using Different Propeller Modeling Methods

Propeller modeling in virtual captive model tests is crucial to the prediction accuracy of ship maneuvering motion. In present study, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method with two propeller methods, Sliding Mesh (SM) and Multiple Reference Frames (MRF), was used simulate for a KVLCC2 tanker model. The tests, including resistance, self-propulsion, rudder force, oblique towing, circular motion, towing steady turning angle, were conducted by solving Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations. computed hydrodynamic forces, derivatives, hull-propeller-rudder interaction coefficients validated against available test data CFD results obtained Body Force (BF) literature. Then standard circle zig-zag maneuvers simulated using MMG (Maneuvering Modeling Group) derivatives coefficients, free-running data. most satisfactory agreement terms forces parameters accurate normal force SM rather than MRF or BF while lateral yaw moments methods all good
